The staff at the cancer center at FirstHealth of the Carolinas are dealing with patients each day who have received terrifying news, "YOU have CANCER." News that suddenly drains all strength and hope out of one's soul and body.
The patient sees the caring, overworked Oncologist for a short time. With each visit to the center with my wife, as I waited in the waiting room when she was having chemotherapy therapy or a lab test, I watched patients quietly looking and grasping for hope on every word and the action of the staff who spent most of the time with them.
Some patients, when the staff were not present, were quietly crying; others anxiously nervous, others talking excessively to cover their fears. Yet when the staff nurse or receptionist appeared, the atmosphere changed due to their deeply caring responses and instructions. This unique staff skill set is not taught in school or through hospital meetings or training sessions.
No matter how great the design of the cancer center may be (which is important), without question it is the caring and skilled staff that makes the difference, because they believe they are participating in something important. When we feel cared for, we give back, we are more invested, we also care more.
As a result of their experience, and in honor of Dr. Thomas Richard and Dr. Ray Washington, the Stevenson's established a named endowment Fund. Interest from the fund will support radiologic breast imaging studies and procedures for low-income citizens of Richmond County at FirstHealth Moore Regional Richmond.
